My name is David Shofstahl; I moved to VA from north-east OH in 2000 and I live in Clifton Forge with my wife and our 5 kids (ages 4 -14). I am a project/personnel manager and estimator for Allman Stone Masonry in Roanoke, VA and I have been in the construction industry for over 20 years. I absolutely love working in construction! I have worked in all the trades and have completed apprenticeships in plumbing, HVAC, and masonry. My primary trade is masonry and my passion is natural stone work.
In 2011, my field capacity was reduced due to a back injury, so I took the opportunity to pursue higher education. Building on my experience, I chose Civil Engineering Technology with a concentration in Construction Management and a minor in Training and Development. I am specifically interested in Human Resource Development in the construction industry. In our industry, we tend to focus on productivity and risk management while overlooking employee development; the labor force is often viewed and treated as a “line item” or a resource rather than human capital. Human resource management and development are typically scorned as soft and unnecessary in construction – and we continue to burn out the workforce by exploiting talent when we should be expanding career/skills development. I think that the answer to our skills-gap problem is not just in training but also in retention!
I earned associates degrees in Science, Business Administration, and Education at my local community college before transferring to Old Dominion University where I currently study as an distance learner. I will hold my bachelor’s degree by May, 2016. I plan to continue my studies by going on for a Master’s degree in human resource education in workforce development and a Master’s certificate in construction management so I will be able to develop/teach construction supervision/leadership programs for community college, where the construction workforce can expand their potential through attainable, relevant education.
I am also certified as NCCER instructor in Construction Technology and Project Supervision.
